There are 93 million of children in the world who cannot go to school at the moment and even more children never finish the school - 60% of them are girls, who often have to stop going to school because of marriage and motherhood.
UNICEF’s main effort in this area is to provide access to the education for all children regardless of race, gender and origin, and to achieve that every child in the world reaches at least elementary education. UNICEF believes that it is the education that has the great impact on the quality of life both in light of the future assertion and in elimination of problems arising from innocence and harmful traditions - the disease from inadequate sanitation, malnutrition, early marriage and motherhood for girls, female circumcision, HIV / AIDS prevention.
For example in Mauritania the Education project is so successful that the number of girls enrolled last year exceeded for the first time the number of boys.
UNICEF seeks to raise the awareness of the importance of education and continually improve instructions.
Within this project UNICEF in collaboration with the national governments build for example the informal education centres in the areas where children are for some reason prevented from attending traditional elementary school (e.g. Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Bhutan and others). In the already existing schools we build the sources of drinking water, canteen and sanitary facilities, train teachers, etc.
We also supply the areas affected by war conflict or natural disaster with so-called School in the box that is a mobile kit of teaching aids for 80 students and 1 teacher where the main aim of UNICEF is to involve children as soon as possible in the regular school attendance with a positive effect on their psyche.
Example of costs:
20 CZK - pencils and exercise books for three
4200 CZK - school in a box
300 000 CZK - construction equipment and classroom in Malawi
